Storage: Object Drive Storage (SNIA, presenter: Mark Carlson)
The Storage Networking Industry Association has created a Technical Workgroup on Object Drives. The group is working to research the requirements for object drives in both a key/value protocol as well as drive hosted object software.

This talk will cover the implications of this new architectural partitioning of storage solutions. Scale out storage solutions can add storage in increments of individual disk drives rather than entire storage systems. By adding more computational resources on the drive itself, other components of the system can be reduced in cost. By having a consistent standardized component in the solution, the cost of management is reduced. These and other implications will be explored in the talk.

Storage: Architecting Highly Efficient Web-scale Cold Storage for Unstructured Data - Every Bit and Watt Counts - Adrian Herrera, Caringo
'Cold data' is used to describe the 70-80 percent of an organization's data that is rarely accessed but rarely doesn't mean never. This data has unique value and must remain readily accessible, however, in web-scale storage environments conventional storage tools and technologies are simply too expensive. At the multi-to-hundred Petabyte scale every bit of memory and watt of energy adds up, and ease of scale and management in a highly reliable fashion is key. Meet the new fronTIER of data storage, nearly bottomless volumes of unique data, which requires entirely new methods of storage at scale. In this presentation we will discuss the requirements for web-scale cold storage and present a solution leveraging archive-optimized HDDs with Progressive Capacity and a cold storage object store software with adaptive power conservation technology. The combination of which creates a commercially available cold data storage tier for anyone to use.

Storage: Benchmarking Conventional and Kinetic Swift Object Storage Systems - David Burks & Mayur Shetty, Seagate
Since the inception of the Kinetic Open Storage Platform, Seagate has completed tens of thousands of hours of testing on Kinetic drives and complete Kinetic systems running various Object Storage software stacks. One of the most common questions from customers, partners, analysts and press is: "How does Kinetic performance compare to traditional systems"

Seagate will present a comprehensive evaluation of for system level performance for both conventional Swift and Kinetic Swift systems. We will discuss a range of benchmarking tools, their strengths and weaknesses and discuss the key design consideration in building a Kinetic based Swift system targeted to meet various workload and performance objectives.

In addition, we will also include a summary of implementation approaches related to Shingled Magnetic Recording, including the approach Kinetic drives will take compared to conventional SMR drives.

Storage: Driving Down the Cost of Storage with SMR Technology - Geoffrey Mershon, WD
SMR is a new datacenter storage technology that enables increased capacity to drive down the cost of storage. In this talk we will walk through 4 key items storage IT professionals need to know about this new technology:
1) SMR Technology: why, and what is it?
2) Implementing SMR in the Data Center: a standardized approach (review of current INCITS T10 and T13 standardization of ZBC and ZAC).
3) Advantages to varying SMR implementations in the DC.
4) Partnering with the Ecosystem to facilitate adoption.
